Should I come out?
We cannot advise you on whether you should tell your family, friends, and colleagues that you have Body Integrity Identity Disorder.
That decision is a very important decision to make, with many ramifications, and potentially significant impact on your life, and that of your loved ones.
Should you decide to tell selected people in your life that you are transabled, you should prepare yourself for a difficult reaction, and perhaps even a loss of that relationship (even if only temporary). That said, it often happens that the people you tell react neutrally, if not positively.
Be prepared to educate the people you tell about BIID, as it is not a well known condition. Even coming out to your therapist or psychiatrist will often involve having to tell them about BIID and give them resources to learn about BIID.
