JOHNSON CITY -- A village man lost both legs after he was run over by a train while laying on his back on railroad tracks early Sunday, Johnson City Police said.

Kenneth Davidson, 32, of Broad Street, was struck by a westbound train on Norfolk Southern Railroad tracks near Lester Avenue at 4:50 a.m. Sunday, Lt. David Smith said.

Police are not sure what he was doing on the tracks, but are continuing their investigation, Smith said.

The victim was found under the stopped train near 101 Lester Ave., according to the Broome County Sheriff's Office, who assisted Johnson City police.

Both of Davidson's legs were severed above the knee, Smith said. Davidson was taken to Wilson Regional Medical Center where he was listed in critical condition Monday, a hospital spokesman said.

Davidson's amputated legs were found outside the tracks and quite a distance from his body, investigators said.

No charges will be filed against the train operators, Smith said.
